DTF planning guide
DTF gang sheet spacing and edge margin guide
Use gap for the clear distance between neighboring transfer rectangles and edge margin for the reserved border around the sheet. There is no universal value for every DTF supplier. Start with the vendor’s current minimums, increase them when trimming tolerance or handling requires it, and never reduce them merely to force a cheaper sheet to fit.
Spacing looks like a small setting, but it can change sheet count when a layout is close to a row or column boundary. The safest estimate separates the internal gap from the outer edge margin and records both values with the quote. That makes it easier to reproduce the calculation when the supplier or production process changes.
Search intent covered: dtf gang sheet spacing and margin. Searchers often encounter conflicting gap recommendations and need to understand which value belongs between transfers and which value belongs at the outer sheet edge. A useful answer must explain the two controls, show how they affect fit, and direct the user back to the supplier’s documented production rules.
Calculator starting points
These presets open the DTF calculator with editable values. Change designs, pricing basis, shipping, gap, edge margin, and sheet candidates after the preset loads.
| Preset | Recommended sheet | Total | Cost each | Open calculator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter gang sheet | 22 x 96 | $50.00 | $0.69 | Calculate Starter gang sheet |
| Small format test | 13 x 19 | $9.00 | $1.50 | Calculate Small format test |
| Long roll estimate | 22 x 96 | $50.00 | $0.69 | Calculate Long roll estimate |
Decision checkpoints
- Check the supplier’s current artwork setup page before choosing a minimum.
- Confirm whether its quoted spacing is edge-to-edge or includes transparent padding.
- Use a larger edge margin if the roll needs room for handling or trimming.
- Recalculate after any gap change because one small adjustment can add another sheet.
Gap and edge margin are different
Gap separates one planned transfer boundary from the next. Edge margin removes a border from all four sides of the sheet. Treating them as the same value can either waste usable space or place artwork too close to an edge.
If the artwork file already contains transparent padding, measure consistently. The calculator cannot see that padding unless you include it in the entered width and height. Double-counting it makes the estimate unnecessarily conservative; ignoring it can make the supplier layout fail.
Test the sensitive boundary
When a design nearly fits one more time across the width, compare the layout at the documented minimum and at a slightly larger working value. If the sheet count changes, the quote is sensitive to spacing. Record that fact and avoid promising the lower cost until the production builder confirms the tighter arrangement.
Assumptions
- Spacing is uniform between planned rectangular transfer boundaries.
- One edge-margin value is applied around the entire usable sheet.
- The selected unit is converted consistently before packing.
- The supplier does not require additional hidden handling zones.
Limitations
- Some vendors impose different top, bottom, or side margins.
- Irregular contour nesting can produce a different result than rectangular packing.
- Heat-transfer application spacing on a garment is unrelated to gang sheet artwork spacing.
- Final acceptance remains controlled by the vendor’s uploader and production checks.
A useful quoting habit
Include the gap and edge margin in the copied summary sent with a quote. If a customer later changes transfer size or the vendor updates its minimum, you can identify why the sheet count changed instead of treating the earlier estimate as a fixed promise.
